Hello Walk

In the early 1970s, Dr. Iris Argo, a 1933 alumna of GSW and a long-time English faculty member, promoted saying a friendly “hello” to anyone you met on the campus walkway stretching from Jackson Hall to the James Earl Carter Library. The walkway itself was refurbished in 2002.

The Commons

Previously a parking lot, The Commons was transformed into a green space in 2002. The work was completed as part of a $854,000 GDOT grant to create pedestrian spaces on campus.

Rosalynn Carter Statue

This bronze statue of former First Lady and GSW alumna Rosalynn Carter was unveiled in 2013. Sculpted by acclaimed artists Teena Stern and Don Haugen, the statue sits in front of the Rosalynn Carter Health and Human Sciences Complex, surrounded by a butterfly garden. It is the only complete statue of Mrs. Carter in the world.

Newman Alumni Center

Created in 2011, the Chicken-Donkey-Elephant sculpture was created by art students and faculty. Since then, it has become a recognizable landmark on campus, standing on the east side of the Fine Arts Building. Read more about the sculpture's origins and meaning here.

Presidential Plaza

In 2017, the Presidential Plaza was dedicated to former President Jimmy Carter. During the ceremony, Carter wrote his signature in a piece of concrete. This etching mirrors the one Carter made in the wet cement of the new Wheatley Administration Building circle driveway as a GSW student leader in 1942. The two etchings - made 75 years apart - now sit opposite each other across the Plaza.

Centennial Plaza

Located behind the Storm Dome, Centennial Plaza was completed in 20066 to coincide with GSW's centennial celebrations. The center of the Plaza is home to a fountain that features a sculpture of 100 engraved glass books atop a steel desk. The sculpture was created entirely on the GSW campus, with art faculty Charles Wells and alumna Reba Hunter leading the project.

Newman Alumni Center

The Newman Alumni Center houses the offices of Alumni Affairs, Annual Giving, and the GSW Foundation. In November 2000, the Board of Regents approved the University's proposal to name the facility in recognition of Jerry and Marjorie Newman of Columbus, Georgia. Newman is a GSW graduate and Foundation trustee, whose generous donation funded the renovation.
